How Does Spirituality Influence Everyday Life?

GROWING SPIRITUALLY often does not have to claim extra time from our busy lives, because our lives are filled with opportunities to respond to life spiritually.

Every day multiple opportunities arise for us to consult our inner spirit as we make decisions.

  • The choices we make through the day, whether large or minuscule, are such opportunities.

  • The big question is whether our choices are

    • self-centered (what do I want?) or

    • selfless (how do I want to help someone else?).

That doesn’t mean that we never work for things we want. What it means is that we often consider the needs of other people.

For example,
Here is a minuscule example of an opportunity to make a selfless decision:

  • When I fry eggs for my family for breakfast, some of them turn out especially well while others may be a little more firmly cooked than we prefer.

  • I have a choice which egg to keep for myself and which to put on each family member’s plate.

  • Now, that is a minuscule decision, but if I consult with my inner sense of generosity and caring,I open myself to the spiritual world with which I love to engage.

  • I have the opportunity to act unselfishly in a small way, unnoticed by anyone other than me.

When I am asked to put off what I want to do in order to have time to help a member of my family, I have an opportunity to consult my inner spirit. If I help someone while feeling resentment and impatience, my life is not particularly uplifted.

The amazing thing is that giving myself to others freely and lovingly can result in a truly surprising sense of joy. The more I help others freely and lovingly, the more joy springs up into my inner life. And I always seem to manage eventually to accomplish what I wanted to do as well!

  • When I am in the hardware store, I can focus entirely on finding what I want and paying for it. Or I can be aware of the people near me.

    • I can make eye contact, smile, perhaps comment on the beautiful day.

    • These acts are simple, yet they let the other person know I actually see them as a person rather than a store display. They can even perceive that I care about their welfare.

    • I rarely know how much the person I connected with needed that affirmation.

Everyone needs a bit of caring attention. Virtually everyone brightens up when I notice them.

Everyday life is filled with opportunities to partner with our inner spirit to learn a new way of living and enjoying life.

How Do We Grow Spiritually?

Spiritual Adventures are activities you can try for yourself to energize your experience of spiritual reality and foster your spiritual growth.

For a week, or longer, start each day asking that you be helped to notice someone whom you can acknowledge, listen to, encourage, or help in some way.

Especially ask that you be able to recognize the person’s need and carry through with help.

In the evening, make a note about your experiences with this adventure in your notebook or journal and give thanks for the opportunities of the day.

After a week, review what you have experienced and reflect on what you have learned.

About Us

We are a group of spiritual adventurers sharing our ideas about how to grow spiritually and experience joy in a world that sometimes feels so difficult.

We offer ideas based on our own experience. We do our best to give you simple descriptions, explanations, examples, and exercises.

We promise: no obligation to us on your part, no cost, nothing to join, nothing you must profess to believe, no attempt to convert you. We simply want to share what we have discovered; you can use whatever works for you.

May you grow in the joy of living!
